ob Overview of Classroom Teacher

The Classroom Teacher provides direct and appropriate individualized instruction based on IEP goals and objectives in the subject areas according to the New York Learning Standards and develops social skills while maintaining classroom discipline and safety.  The teacher collaborates with a multidisciplinary team that includes milieu therapists/assistants, social workers, parents and other professionals in the education and treatment of each child.   The Teacher reports student progress by reviewing the IEP on a quarterly basis, completing a daily computer log, participating in quarterly Planning Conferences, and by issuing report cards.

 10 month school year and 6 week summer program

Hours – 8:30am-3:30pm daily, except for one day per week so designated for staff conference: 3:00pm-5:00pm.

 Essential Duties of Classroom Teacher

 

Key duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Direct supervisor of all staff assigned to the classroom
  • Demonstrates competence with Therapeutic Crisis Intervention. 
  • Knows and complies with agency standards regarding therapeutic holds.               
  • Demonstrates basic understanding of suicide assessment & intervention.               
  • Has knowledge of basic issues of adverse medication reactions.  
  • Adheres to agency policies regarding privacy & confidentiality.    
  • Demonstrates & models sensitivity to cultural background of children, families and co-workers.        
  • Follows up on concerns and complaints registered by children, families, and referral sources.
  • Maintains work attendance consistent with agency policy.                           
  • Is flexible and accommodating in unplanned or crisis situations.  
  • Ensures all educational paper work requirements are completed in a timely fashion including: daily log, conference reports, incident reports, IEP’s, and report cards.                
  • Confronts classroom /student problems in a consistent & respectful fashion.        
  • Uses available program data (Academic Testing scores, report cards, Treatment Planning Conference Reports, and information in the student’s case history) to inform decision making &Problem-solving.          
  • Plans instruction to achieve selected objectives in keeping with the student's IEP and NY State learning standards.                                                                    
  • Has identified strengths and weaknesses of each learner.                             
  • Plans instruction to meet the learning styles and needs of individual students.  This includes appropriate program modifications where possible and necessary for ED/LD students.
  • Designs out of class experiences to add relevance to what is being taught.
  • Understands and adheres to evacuation and other fire safety procedures 
  • Supports overall strategic plan of the organization.
  • Ability to adhere to our organization's core values and commitments.

 

 Essential Qualifications of Classroom Teacher

 

Key qualifications include:  

  • New York State Certification in Elementary or grades 7-12 ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies with Special Education Extension. (Required)
  • Bachelor’s in education. (Required). Master’s preferred.
  • Teaching Experience Preferred 
  • Must be willing to both work with, and seek to increase their sensitivity and competency in working with clients with diverse characteristics that may include, but are not limited to any of the following: race, ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, physical and mental health histories, and differing socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Must be willing and flexible in service provision to clients in terms of location of services, which may include, but are not limited to: in agency facilities, in the client’s home, in the client’s community, at the client’s school, in another service provider, etc. as indicated by the nature of service and the client’s needs.
  • Must be willing and able to participate in the supervision of all paraprofessional staff that work in the classroom. 
  • Ability to access and utilize ADP app on smartphone or other device for access to agency programs.

 

Physical/Travel Requirements of Classroom Teacher

  • Must possess ability to sit, stand, walk, run, climb stairs, and lift weights of up to 30 lbs.
  • Candidates who are successfully hired, must participate in our Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training which concludes with a written and verbal test, and you will be evaluated on conducting a proper physical restraint.
  • Be able to hear and see well enough to provide appropriate supervision of children.
  • Must have reliable transportation. Travel required: 10%
