Board Member Position Opening
Student Advocacy, Inc. provides legal representation and counsel for students in grades Pre-K - 12 in Westchester and Putnam Counties, NY who have difficulty with learning due to disabilities and other challenges. Our organization is committed to making legal services on education matters accessible to all families. We primarily represent those with limited financial resources. Serving over 500 students annually, attorneys and advocates work with students, families, school personnel, and community partners to ensure equity and access to education for all children in our community. The agency has an annual operating budget of $1.4 million.
Position Summary: Student Advocacy currently has openings for individuals with varied experiences to serve on its Board of Directors. Its Board is comprised of members who are enthusiastic about the mission and interested in providing guidance on financial sustainability, strategic focus and compliance.
Responsibilities
• Commitment to the mission and values of Student Advocacy.
• Serve as an ambassador for Student Advocacy to colleagues, friends and families to raise awareness of its mission, programs and services.
• Give a meaningful personal financial contribution to our two major fundraising activities: our end-of-year appeal and our signature fundraiser, the Overcoming the Odds Awards Celebration (OTO).
• Work collaboratively with and support the Executive Director to ensure effective planning that aligns with the organization’s strategic vision and goals.
• Attend virtual and in-person Board meetings. Meetings are held 8 times a year on Tuesday evenings from 6-7:30 p.m.
• Serve on one or more Board committees and take on special assignments as needed to advance the work of the committee and agency.
Qualifications
• Interest in Pre-K - 12 education and the educational rights of students.
• Able to commit time and actively participate in Board/committee meetings and other special activities, especially attendance at Student Advocacy fundraising events.
• Experience with NYS-based nonprofits is preferred but not required.
• Financial, legal, human resources, social media and/or marketing experience are highly preferred.
• Corporate experience and/or extensive networks are a plus.
• Able to commit to a 3-year Board term with the option of renewal.
