HVJC Board Member Position Opening (Volunteer Position)

The Hudson Valley Justice Center (HVJC) is a not-for-profit law firm that provides free legal services to low-income individuals and families throughout the Hudson Valley. HVJC handles a broad range of civil legal matters, including housing, immigration, family law, public benefits, disability, consumer, and employment law. HVJC is currently the only organization representing non-citizens in eviction proceedings across Orange, Westchester, Dutchess, Putnam, Sullivan, Rockland, and Ulster Counties.

In addition to individual legal representation, HVJC engages in class actions, community organizing, and advocacy for legislative reforms that promote equal access to justice

Position Summary: HVJC is currently seeking individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences to join its Board of Directors. Board members share a deep commitment to the mission and play a key role in guiding the organization’s financial sustainability, strategic focus, and legal and ethical compliance. This is a meaningful opportunity to help shape the direction of a growing legal services organization making a difference in the lives of vulnerable community members.

This is a volunteer position.

Responsibilities

  • Commitment to the mission and values of HVJC.
  • Serve as an ambassador for HVJC to colleagues, friends and families to raise awareness of its mission, programs and services.
  • Make or secure a meaningful financial contribution to HVJC’s end-of-year appeal
  • Collaborate with fellow Board members and the Executive Director to ensure effective planning and alignment with HVJC’s strategic goals.
  • Attend five Board meetings per year (held Wednesday evenings from 6:00–7:30 p.m., virtually or in-person).
  • Participate in key fundraising events

 

Qualifications:

  • Interest in social justice, civil legal services, and immigrant and low-income community advocacy.
  • Willingness and availability to actively participate in Board and committee meetings, as well as other HVJC activities.
  • Experience with New York State-based nonprofits is preferred but not required.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable:
    • Finance
    • Law/legal services
    • Human resources
    • Social media, communications, or marketing
  • Corporate or philanthropic experience and/or strong community networks are a plus.
  • Commitment to a three-year Board term, with the option to renew.
