Role Summary:
The Board of Directors at the YWCA of Yonkers provides strategic leadership, governance, and fiduciary oversight to ensure the organization fulfills its mission with integrity, sustainability, and community impact. We are actively seeking dedicated professionals with expertise in Fundraising/Development, Human Resources, and Legal Affairs to complement our Board’s strengths and support key strategic priorities. Board Members serve as ambassadors, thought partners, and stewards of our mission—contributing their skills, time, and networks to advance the YWCA’s goals and ensure long-term success.
Core Responsibilities:
- Governance & Leadership
- Uphold and promote the mission, vision, and values of the YWCA of Yonkers.
- Participate actively in quarterly Board meetings and strategic planning efforts.
- Provide fiduciary oversight to ensure financial health, operational accountability, and compliance.
- Serve on committees or task forces aligned with your expertise.
- Specialized Contributions
Fundraising & Development
- Advise on fundraising strategies, donor cultivation, and sustainable development practices.
- Support annual campaigns, grant initiatives, and signature fundraising events.
- Leverage personal and professional networks to expand donor and sponsor engagement.
Human Resources
- Provide guidance on HR policies, workforce development, and organizational structure.
- Support efforts to enhance employee retention, talent management, and DEI initiatives.
- Assist in executive leadership evaluations and succession planning processes.
Legal Affairs
- Offer legal insight on governance, contracts, regulatory compliance, and risk management.
- Review and advise on policies, agreements, and organizational practices.
- Ensure adherence to nonprofit law, ethical standards, and best governance practices.
Advocacy & Community Engagement
- Serve as an advocate and ambassador for the YWCA within the Yonkers community and beyond.
- Support outreach efforts to strengthen partnerships, collaborations, and public awareness.
- Attend and promote YWCA events, programs, and initiatives.
Philanthropic Commitment
- Participate in the YWCA of Yonkers’ annual giving program in accordance with the Board’s “give or get” policy.
- Actively contribute to fundraising efforts through personal giving, sponsorship outreach, or donor cultivation.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated expertise in Fundraising/Development, Human Resources, or Legal Affairs.
- Commitment to the mission and social justice values of the YWCA.
- Experience with nonprofit governance is preferred but not required.
- Strategic mindset, collaborative spirit, and high ethical standards.
- Willingness to leverage professional expertise and networks to advance organizational goals.
- Ability to commit time for Board meetings, committee work, and organizational initiatives.
Term & Expectations:
- Term Length: 1-year term, renewable upon Board approval. Meetings: Quarterly Board meetings for Advisors, plus participation in at least one committee.
- Time Commitment: Approximately 4-6 hours per month, inclusive of meetings and event participation.
- Location: Meetings held in Yonkers, NY, with hybrid options available.
- Compensation: Volunteer position. Board service is an opportunity to make a lasting impact in the community.
