Job Description:

 

Manhattanville's Andrew Bodenrader Center for Academic Writing and Composition (The Writing Center) is seeking Learning Specialists to work 5 hours per week. Learning Specialists in the Writing Center assist students with writing across disciplines and at any stage in the writing process. Learning Specialists are available for both in-person and online tutoring, and work a variety of collaborative one-to-one appointments, including scheduled and drop-in appointments, as well as synchronous and asynchronous appointments. Writing Center Learning Specialists, in line with the Writing Center's mission statement, "strive to build the confidence of student writers," "help students develop as writers and learn writing skills and strategies that will help them succeed at the college level and beyond," and foster "an environment that is inclusive of all learners."

 

Supervisory Responsibilities: none

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

 

Learning Specialists will keep record of any and all sessions they have with tutees, attend monthly Writing Center meetings, and communicate regularly with fellow staff (including Peer Tutors and Apprentices, graduate Teaching and Tutoring Fellows, other Learning Specialists, and Academic Writing Faculty) and the Writing Center Director.

 

In this role, Learning Specialists are expected to:

 

  • Be knowledgeable about writing
  • Be available to tutor 5 hours per week in-person in the Writing Center
  • Be friendly and have strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Be able to provide tutoring in-person, synchronously online, and asynchronously online
  • Provide collaborative one-to-one tutoring for any student working on writing in any discipline and at any stage in the writing process (brainstorming, outlining, organizing, revising, drafting, etc.)
  • Help students from a variety of backgrounds and abilities, including students whose first language is not English
  • Follow Writing Center protocol and procedures to 1) keep record of any and all tutoring sessions by completing Post-Session Forms at the end of each session; 2) complete post-shift Time Entry/Reflection Forms at the end of each shift; and 3) communicate with students, staff, faculty, colleagues, the Writing Center Director, etc.
  • Attend all scheduled Staff Meetings (typically held virtually once a month)
  • Collaborate and communicate with other Writing Center staff
  • Maintain professional conduct and appearance

 

Qualifications:

 

  •  

Experience working with undergraduate students who need writing support.

 

Education:

 

Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree or those currently pursuing a Master's degree preferred.

 

Or education and/or experience that is equivalent to the above.

 

Physical Requirements:

 

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer

 

Hours Expectation:

 

Five hours a week; 29 hours or less
