The STEM Alliance is a rapidly growing Westchester County nonprofit that is building a network of STEM learning opportunities for adults and children. Our goal is to empower our clients with STEM skills that not only lead to higher paying jobs but also solve today’s most critical challenges. 

This is an important period in our growth. We are launching a state-of-the-art STEM Mobile that brings hands-on learning directly to underserved communities. We are also celebrating the 60th anniversary of our nationally recognized, award-winning Co-Op Summer Enrichment Camp, and marking the 10th year of producing the region’s only large-scale STEM festival, STEM-tastic. These milestones call for bold, thoughtful communications that reflect the power of our programs and the promise of our mission. We are also expanding our work in digital equity, ensuring that people have access to devices and skills to succeed in a digital world.

 

Position Summary

The STEM Alliance is seeking a seasoned Director of Communications to serve as the lead strategist for our public voice and visibility. This is a senior leadership role for an experienced communicator who brings deep expertise in public relations, brand building, and narrative strategy. This role reports to the STEM Alliance Executive Leadership and manages a small team of staff and contractors, including the Communications Senior Manager and creative freelance partners.

You will be the primary external affairs lead for the organization, responsible for increasing awareness of our programs, elevating our media presence, and ensuring our brand is clear, consistent, and grounded in equity. As we expand our reach and deepen our impact, your leadership will ensure that our story connects with partners, donors, and communities in meaningful ways.

 

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Communications and Public Relations

  • Lead all external communications strategy that raises visibility and strengthens our public profile
  • Serve as the organization’s media spokesperson and manage relationships with journalists, media outlets, and influencers
  • Craft messaging for key public-facing opportunities, including speeches, press releases, talking points, and op-eds
  • Partner with leadership to align messaging across all departments and reflect our mission and values in every external interaction
  • Develop and implement crisis communications protocols to ensure timely, transparent, and effective responses to sensitive issues

Brand Leadership and Content Development

  • Uphold and evolve our brand identity to ensure consistency, authenticity, and resonance across all communications, ensuring all communications are accessible, inclusive, and culturally responsive, reflecting the diversity of the communities we serve.
  • Oversee development of print and digital content including newsletters, social media, video scripts, blog posts, and collateral
  • Guide our digital presence with a strategic approach to website content, social media, and email outreach
  • Leverage data and analytics to refine communications strategies and increase digital engagement.

Campaign and Event Visibility

  • Lead communication efforts around major public events and milestones such as the STEM Mobile launch, STEM-tastic anniversary, and summer program celebrations, including a Gala
  • Partner with the Resource Development team to craft compelling donor communications, fundraising collateral, and case statements that inspire giving.
  • Create and manage materials that support outreach and community awareness

Organizational Leadership and Collaboration

  • Manage the annual communications budget, ensuring resources are allocated strategically for maximum reach and impact.
  • Serve as a key member of the leadership team, contributing to organizational strategy through a communications lens
  • Foster collaboration between communications, program, and resource development teams to ensure cohesive storytelling
  • Represent The STEM Alliance externally with professionalism, warmth, and clarity
Requirements
Who You Are
  • A senior communications professional with at least 10 years of experience in public relations, strategic communications, or marketing, preferably in the nonprofit, education, or social impact space
  • A strong media strategist and storyteller with a track record of building organizational visibility and influence
  • An exceptional writer and editor with a deep understanding of audience, tone, and voice
  • A thoughtful and equity-driven communicator who believes in the power of community-centered narratives
  • A collaborative leader who values relationships, works with humility, and communicates with intention
  • Strategic, hands-on, and comfortable leading both vision and execution
  • Experience supporting public events, program campaigns, or milestone communications is highly valued
