The Sharing Shelf is a Westchester-based nonprofit dedicated to providing clothing and essentials to children and teens in need, helping them feel confident, prepared, and valued. Through strong community partnerships and generous supporters, The Sharing Shelf serves thousands of children each year and continues to grow its impact.
We are seeking our first-ever Director of Development & Communications. We are looking for a strategic, relationship-driven leader who is equally comfortable setting vision and rolling up their sleeves to execute. This is a unique opportunity to build and lead a comprehensive development and communications function that fuels our next chapter of growth.
Position Overview
The Director of Development & Communications will serve as a key member of the leadership team and will be responsible for designing, implementing, and executing a comprehensive fundraising and communications strategy to advance The Sharing Shelf’s mission.
This is a 32-hour per week position (Monday–Thursday), with occasional meetings or events on Fridays.
Development leadership will be the primary focus of this role.
Key Responsibilities
Development (Primary Focus)
Strategy & Planning
- Develop and execute a comprehensive annual development plan with measurable goals across individual giving, corporate partnerships, foundation grants, events, and campaigns.
- Establish long-term fundraising strategies to increase revenue and diversify funding streams.
- Partner with the Executive Director and Board to strengthen fundraising capacity and engagement.
Individual & Major Gifts
- Cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors, with a focus on growing mid-level and major gift support.
- Build meaningful, long-term relationships with donors and prospects.
- Create compelling cases for support and customized proposals.
Corporate & Foundation Relations
- Identify and pursue new corporate sponsors and foundation funders.
- Partner with the Executive Director to manage grants.
- Steward existing institutional relationships and ensure timely reporting.
Events & Campaigns
- Lead strategy and execution of fundraising events and seasonal campaigns.
- Manage event sponsorship outreach and donor engagement strategy.
- Oversee peer-to-peer and community-driven fundraising initiatives.
Systems & Operations
- Oversee donor database management, gift tracking, and reporting.
- Analyze fundraising data and prepare regular reports for leadership and the Board.
- Ensure strong donor stewardship processes, acknowledgments, and engagement touchpoints.
Communications
Strategic Messaging
- Develop and implement an integrated communications strategy aligned with fundraising goals.
- Strengthen and elevate The Sharing Shelf’s brand voice and storytelling.
Content Development
- Oversee creation of compelling donor communications including newsletters, annual reports, appeals, impact stories, and campaign materials.
- Develop messaging for website, email marketing, and print collateral.
Digital & Social Media
- Manage website content and updates.
- Oversee social media strategy to grow engagement and visibility.
- Ensure consistent and compelling digital storytelling that drives donor engagement.
Public Relations
- Identify opportunities to increase visibility through media, partnerships, and community engagement.
- Draft press releases and coordinate media outreach when appropriate.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in development and communications.
- At least 5 years in a leadership or management role.
- Demonstrated success in fundraising, including major gifts, corporate partnerships, and campaigns.
- Experience building or scaling development functions is highly preferred.
- Exceptional writing, storytelling, and presentation skills.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to execute tactically and independently.
- Strong relationship builder with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Experience working closely with executive leadership and boards.
- Proficiency with donor databases and CRM systems. Experience with Keela is a plus.
- Passion for mission-driven work and serving children and families.
