Are you passionate about helping young people succeed in their education? The White Plains Public Library is seeking energetic, enthusiastic teachers for our Teacher in the Library program to provide after school homework help and academic support to students in grades 7-12 in the Edge, our teen library. Teachers in the Library help youth successfully complete their homework assignments and improve their school work habits. They work to develop positive relationships with teens that will increase their confidence and motivate them to do their best. The Teacher in the Library program generally follows the White Plains Public Schools calendar.

Candidates should genuinely enjoy working with youth and families; have a background in education and teaching; and have availability on afternoons and evenings, 4-7pm, Monday-Thursday, during the school year. Please state in your cover letter which days and how many days per week you are available. Fluency in language(s) other than English, especially Spanish, is preferred. Ability to help with college applications and essays would be a welcome asset , but not required.

Duties

  • Helping teens understand and complete homework including, but not limited to, ELA, math, science, and social studies assignments.
  • Working individually or in small groups with students in grades 7-12.
  • Helping parents/caregivers understand what is required for assignments and offering advice and encouragement in assisting their youth with homework.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education BA or BS degree.
  • Valid NYS Teaching License. Dependent on experience, current NYS substitute teaching licensure will be considered. Current licensure from other states will be considered.
  • Minimum of 1 year in classroom teaching experience.
  • Previous tutoring experience is desirable.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace software.
  • Professional references required.
  • Successful completion of a background check.

Required Skills

  • Ability to work with a diverse group of teens and parents/caregivers.
  • Ability to quickly assess student skill level and manage small groups of mixed age teens at one time.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Being very approachable and welcoming, while enforcing library rules and code of conduct, is essential.
  • Ability to work independently.
